Location: Croatia is at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe. Its southern border is fully to the Adriatic Sea. By land, it borders Hungary to the north, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the east, and Slovenia to the northwest. Croatia borders Italy as well to the west, but by a maritime border. 

Area: Croatia has an area of 56,594 sq km including over a thousand islands. Its territory includes the Dinaric Alps with the Dinara peak being the highest (1,831m). The country has a long coastline along the Adriatic Sea where the land is with low mountains. 

Major cities: Zagreb is the capital and most populous city in Croatia. 1,071,150 people reside there. Most of the other major cities like Split (161, 312 residents) and Rijeka (108,622 residents) are located on the coast.
