Can I Use Trash Bags to Pack Odd-Shaped Items?

If you’re trying to cut down on moving costs and want to find a realistic solution for those large, unwieldy items in your home, you may turn to trash bags as a solution. After all, heavy-duty garbage bags offer a flexible layer of protection for a minimum cost—perfect for when you want to cut costs and corners, right?

Yes and no. Although you can use trash bags for some items (and they can prove helpful in the overall moving process), it’s not always the best solution. Here’s the approach we recommend.

> Moving Full Closets: Trash bags come in very handy when want to move an entire wardrobe intact (and without taking everything down from the hanger). This can be especially helpful for large and bulky clothes like sweaters, sportswear, and winter gear. Group your clothes into bunches, pull the trash bag up from the bottom, and slip them around the hangers (leaving only the hook on top). You can then quickly and easily transport the whole wardrobe in just a few trips.

> Bedding: Large bedding items like quilts, pillows, bedspreads, and more tend to take up a lot of room, and it can be counterintuitive to use up a whole box for one blanket. Trash bags can help you transport these items quickly and cost-effectively, but be wary of the lack of waterproofing and of trapping moisture in with the bedding.

> Stuffed Animals: If your kids have a ton of stuffed animals, you may be hesitant to use up precious boxes and moving van space to include them. Garbage bags can help you transport them without requiring you to invest too much time or money.

> Waterproofing: Most trash bags aren’t 100 percent waterproof, but they can provide an extra layer of protection if you’ll be moving in less-than-ideal conditions. Although they can’t protect your items from breaking or being jostled in transit, they can be used for heavy rain and/or snow.

For all other items, we strongly suggest you use boxes designed for each specific use (or have us do it for you). Not only will your belongings be safer this way, but you can avoid the potential for items to be accidentally tossed out. In all the hustle and bustle of moving, it’s very easy to mistake a garbage bag full of belongings you want to keep with actual garbage—for both your movers and for your family and friends providing a helping hand.
